SUMMER HOLIDAY CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES AT MANNINGTON

From life underwater to dens and survival, we will be connecting with nature at Mannington Gardens and the surrounding countryside. Our Nature Discovery Days are fun and exciting whilst also learning about wildlife and the environment. Each day has a specific topic, focused on an aspect of nature. Pond and Stream Life

10.00 - 12.30 Half Day

Mannington is blessed with many watery habitats from ponds, streams and even a moat! Spend the day exploring water life searching for frogs, toads, water bugs and beetles, dragonfly nymphs and hopefully a great crested newt. The crayfish will hopefully yield some red clawed crayfish and perhaps some perch, roach or stone loach. We will end the day by walking up a beautiful clear gravel-bottomed stream. Wellies essential.

Dens and Survival

10.00 - 3.00 Full Day

Spend the day up in our ancient woodlands creating a shelter from branches, foliage and other natural materials. We will also try out fire lighting techniques, build an underground cooking oven and look for wild plants vital for carbohydrates and vitamins. Bring along a potato to cook or marshmallows to roast in the fire. Don't forget waterproofs and warm clothing just in case.

Minibeasts - The World of Invertebrates

10.00 - 12.30 Half Day

Weird, wonderful, beautiful, ugly, beneficial or pests - whatever you think, creepy crawlies are fascinating! Explore the life cycles of beetles, bugs, butterflies and bees, and find out about moths, dragonflies, centipedes, grasshoppers and much more. Learn about various catching techniques such as tree-shaking, pit-fall traps and grass netting. There will be a craft session where you will be able to make your favourite mini beast and of course, theever popular snail race.                                                                                        

Thurs 9th Aug

Trees and Woodcraft

10.00 - 3.00 Full Day

This will be a hands-on day creating animal faces from wood cuttings and weaving willow grown nearby and using other natural materials. Learn about our native trees – how to identify through leaves, bark and silhouette. Ancient trees are living ecosystems home to birds, bats, invertebrates, fungi etc. We will look for evidence of some of these.

Nature Games and Crafts

10.00 - 12.30 Half Day

A day spent around Mannington gardens having fun playing nature games and doing various craft activities. Old favourites such as the Predator/Prey game, Coypu’s revenge plus a few new ones. We will have a boat race and snail race, with boats being made from 100% natural materials.

Thurs 16th Aug

A Walk in the Woods

10.00 - 3.00 Full Day

A ramble of around 3 miles will take us through some beautiful countryside not usually explored by the Minnows. We will have lunch in the middle of a 100 acre ancient woodland in front of an open fire, so feel free to bring marshmallows etc to toast. Suitable outdoor clothing and a rucksack areall advisable as we will be outdoors for the whole day.

Tues 21st Aug

Plant Magic

10.00 - 3.00 Full Day

This hands-on day will include soap and perfume making using rose petals, lavender and other wild and garden plants. We will also have a go at dying cloth using various parts of plants such as wild green alkanet. We will pick some edible salad leaves to try, or make a refreshing vitamin rich tea such as pine needle and mint. We will learn about which plants to avoid due to their poisonous properties.

Fun Day for under 9's

10.00 - 12.30 Half Day

This day will include looking for minibeast and pond netting as well as nature games such as snail races, animal guessing games and a wildlife quiz. All activities will be specially tailored for younger children. We will make a group collage to display in the Information Centre.

Full Day prices: Minnow members £12 and non-members £15.
